Indirect Questions

                    Indirect questions are more formal and polite than direct questions. They begin with phrases such as Do you know. Their word order is:

1. question word                       2. subject                                  3. verb

Do you know         where                                        the post office                            is?

How far is it?		how far it is?
Who are they?	Do you know	who they are?
Why is she crying?	Could/Can you tell me	why she is crying?
When does the plane arrive?		when the plane arrives?
What did they say?		what they said?
Which bus stops at the mall?		which bus stops at the mall?
Where can I park my car?		where I can park my car?

Use if when there is no question word.

Did she pass her driving test?

Do you know

if she passed her driving test?

ประโยคคำถามแบบ Indirect Question เป็นอย่างไร

คำถามชนิดต่างๆ ที่กล่าวมาแล้วนั้นเป็นคำถามโดยตรง (Direct Question) คือทั้งประโยคที่พูดนั้นเป็นคำถามทั้งหมด เป็นคำถามจริงๆ แต่มีคำถามอีกชนิดหนึ่งเป็นส่วนประกอบของประโยคอื่น คือมีคำพูดเป็นส่วนนำก่อนแล้วจึงตามด้วยคำถาม ซึ่งอยู่ในรูปของประโยคบอกเล่า คำถามชนิดนี้ เรียกว่า Indirect Quest. (คำถามโดยอ้อม) คำถามชนิดนี้นิยมใช้พูดคุยสนทนามากเช่นกัน ผู้พูดอาจจะขอโอกาส ขอร้องหรือแสดงความรู้สึกก่อนแล้วจึงตามด้วยคำถาม ประโยคกล่าวนำนั้นอาจจะเป็นรูปประโยคอย่างใดก็ได้ อยู่ที่ผู้พูดว่าจะแสดงความรู้สึกอย่างใดเพื่อนำไปสู่คำถามนั้นๆ เปรียบเทียบคำถามโดยตรงและคำถามโดยอ้อม ดังต่อไปนี้

What is your name? คุณชื่ออะไร	I want to know what your name is ฉันอยากจะทราบว่า คุณชื่ออะไร
Where are you from? คุณมาจากไหน	I don’t know where you are from. ฉันไม่ทราบว่า คุณมาจากไหน
Is she married? เธอแต่งงานหรือยัง	I wonder if she is married. ฉันไม่ทราบว่าเธอแต่งงานหรือยัง
Do you like boxing or football? คุณชอบมวยหรือฟุตบอล	I’d like to know whether you like boxing or football. ฉันอยากจะทราบว่า คุณชอบมวยหรือฟุตบอล
He can play Chinese music, can’t he? เขาเล่นดนตรีจีนได้ มิใช่หรือ	Do you know whether he can play Chinese music or not? คุณทราบไหมว่า เขาเล่นดนตรีจีนได้ไหม

ประโยคคำถามโดยอ้อมนี้ก็คือประโยค Complex นั้นเอง คือส่วนที่เป็นความหมายคำถามนั้นเป็นอนุประโยคทำหน้าที่เป็นนาม (Noun Clause) ซึ่งส่วนมากทำหน้าที่เป็นกรรม (object) ของประโยคหลัก (Main Clause) จากตัวอย่างข้างบนนั้น จะเห็นว่าประโยคนำหรือประโยคหลักมีรูปประโยคเป็นไปได้ต่างๆ กัน

เปลี่ยน Direct Question เป็น Indirect Question

การเปลี่ยนคำถามโดยตรงเป็นคำถามโดยอ้อม ก็คือการเปลี่ยน Direct Speech เป็น Indirect speech นั้นเอง แต่ในที่นี่ประโยคตามเป็นประโยคคำถามทั้งหมด ประโยคคำถามชนิดต่างๆ ที่กล่าวมานั้น สามารถเปลี่ยนเป็นคำถามโดยอ้อมได้ทุกชนิด ฉะนั้นการเปลี่ยนรูปประโยคในที่นี่จึงจำแนกออกตามชนิดของคำถามต่างๆ ดังต่อไปนี้

1. เปลี่ยน Yes/No Question การเปลี่ยนคำถามประเภทนี้เป็น คำถามโดยอ้อม นอกจากเปลี่ยนรูปประโยคเป็นบอกเล่าแล้วใช้ whether or not หรือ if (หรือไม่) เป็นคำเชื่อม

Is he a doctor? เขาเป็นหมอใช่ไหม	I don’t know if he is a doctor. ฉันไม่ทราบว่า เขาเป็นหมอหรือไม่
Can you speak Thai? คุณพูดไทยได้ไหม	I wonder whether you can speak Thai (or not). ฉันไม่ทราบว่า คุณพูดไทยได้หรือไม่
Did she come last week? อาทิตย์ที่แล้ว เธอมาหรือไม่	Do you know whether (or not) she came last week? คุณทราบไหมว่า อาทิตย์ที่แล้วเธอมาหรือไม่
Could you open the door? คุณกรุณาเปิดประตูได้ไหม	I wonder if you could open the door. ฉันไม่ทราบว่า คุณจะกรุณาเปิดประตูได้หรือเปล่า

whether มาคู่กับ or not หรือมาโดยลำพังก็ได้ or no อาจจะวางติด whether หรือวางท้ายประโยคก็ได้ ถ้าประโยคไม่ยาวเกินไป ใช้ if แทนได้แต่ตามด้วย or not ไม่ได้

2. เปลี่ยน Wh-Question การเปลี่ยนคำถามประเภทนี้ เพียงแต่ เปลี่ยนเป็นประโยคบอกเล่าเท่านั้น ไม่ต้องเติมคำเชื่อมใดๆ เพราะมี Question Words เป็นคำเชื่อมอยู่แล้ว

Whom do you want to see? คุณต้องการพบใคร	I want to know whom you want to see. ฉันอยากทราบว่า คุณต้องการพบใคร
What time is it? เวลาเท่าไร	Please tell me what time it is. กรุณาบอกฉันด้วยว่า เวลาเท่าไร
Where is the National Museum? พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติอยู่ที่ไหน	I don’t know where the National Museum is. ฉันไม่ทราบว่า พิพิธภัณฑ์สถานฯ อยู่ที่ไหน
When will the train leave? รถไฟจะออกเวลาเท่าไร (เมื่อไร)	Do you know when the train will leave. คุณทราบไหมว่า รถไฟจะออกเมื่อไร
Why did she say like that? ทำไมเธอจึงพูดเช่นนั้น	I don’t understand why she said like that. ฉันไม่เข้าใจว่า ทำไมเธอจึงพูดเช่นนั้น
How can we get there? เราจะไปที่นั้นกันอย่างไร	Please tell me how we can get there. กรุณาบอกฉันด้วยว่า เราจะไปที่นั่นกันอย่างไร
How many brothers and sisters do you have? คุณมีพี่น้องกี่คน	My question is how many brothers and sisters you have. คำถามของฉันก็คือว่า คุณมีพี่น้องกี่คน

3. เปลี่ยน Alternative question คำถามชนิดนี้เปลี่ยนโดยเติม whether เป็นคำเชื่อม โดยให้เป็นตัวเลือกคู่กับ or ซึ่งมีอยู่แล้ว และเปลี่ยนเป็นประโยคบอกเล่า

Are they Thai or Chinese? พวกเขาเป็นคนไทยหรือจีน	Do you know whether they are Thai or Chinese? คุณทราบไหมว่า พวกเขาเป็น คนไทยหรือจีน
Will Vichian or Tawee come to see me? วิเชียรหรือทวีจะมาพบฉัน	I want to know whether Vichian or Tawee will come to see me. ฉันอยากจะทราบว่าวิเชียรหรือทวีจะมาพบฉัน
Did you stay at home or go somewhere last Sunday? เมื่อวันอาทิตย์ที่แล้ว คุณพักอยู่ที่บ้านหรือไปเที่ยวบางแห่ง	Can you tell me whether you stayed at home or went somewhere last Sunday? คุณบอกฉันได้ไหมว่า เมื่อวันอาทิตย์ที่แล้วนั้น คุณพักอยู่บ้านหรือ ไปเที่ยวบางแห่ง

4. เปลี่ยน Tag Question การเปลี่ยนคำถามประเภทนี้ เหมือนกันกับ Yes/No Question เพราะต้องการคำตอบเหมือนกัน ใช้ whether or not เป็นคำเชื่อมอาจใช้ whether เฉยๆ หรือ if ก็ได้ แต่ใช้ whether or not จะได้ความตรงและเน้นกว่า

He will come, won’t he? เขาจะมามิใช่หรือ	Do you know whether he will come or not? คุณทราบไหมว่า เขาจะมาหรือไม่
The airport is far from the National Stadium? isn’t it? สนามบินอยู่ไกลจากสนามกีฬาแห่งชาติมิใช่หรือ	I’d like to know whether or not the airport is far from the National Stadium. ฉันต้องการจะทราบว่า สนามบินอยู่ ไกลจากสนามกีฬาแห่งชาติหรือไม่
The express train doesn’t stop at this station, does it? รถด่วนไม่หยุดที่สถานีนี้ใช่ไหม	Do you know whether or not the express train stops at this station? คุณทราบไหมว่า รถด่วนหยุดที่สถานีนี่หรือไม่
He didn’t attend the meeting, did he? เขาไม่เข้าประชุมใช่ไหม	I want to know whether or not he attended the meeting. ฉันอยากจะทราบว่า เขาเข้าร่วมประชุมหรือไม่

การตอบคำถาม Indirect Question

คำถามประเภทนี้ แม้จะเป็นคำถามโดยอ้อม แต่ก็สามารถตอบได้ เช่นเดียวกับคำถามทั่วๆ ไป คือสามารถจะตอบได้ตามชนิดต่างๆ ที่กล่าวมาแล้ว ฉะนั้น การตอบคำถามชนิดนี้จึงมีตัวอย่างดังต่อไปนี้

คำถาม
I want to know if he will come.
ฉันอยากจะทราบว่า เขาจะมาหรือไม่
คำตอบ
Yes, he will.  มา, เขาจะมา           No, he won’t,     ไม่มา, เขาจะไม่มา
คำถาม
I wonder if you can open the box.
ฉันไม่ทราบว่า คุณสามารถเปิดกล่องนี้ได้ไหม
คำตอบ
Yes, I can.  ได้, ฉันเปิดได้            No, I can’t.        ไม่ได้,ฉันเปิดไม่ได้

คำถาม
I’d like to know whether she is married or not.
ฉันอยากจะทราบว่า เธอแต่งงานหรือยัง
คำตอบ
Yes, she is. แต่งแล้ว                    No, she isn’t. ยัง, เธอยังไม่แต่งงาน
คำถาม
The question is whether the train will arrive on time (or not).
คำถามก็คือว่า รถไฟจะมาถึงตรงเวลาหรือไม่
คำตอบ
Yes, it will. ตรง, มาตรงเวลา        No, it won’t. เปล่า, ไม่ตรงเวลา
คำถาม
I want to know whether he or his son was punished.
ฉันอยากจะทราบว่า เขาหรือลูกของเขาถูกทำโทษ
คำตอบ
His son was.  ลูกของเขา
คำถาม
Please tell me whether she passed or failed in the test.
ช่วยบอกฉันด้วยว่า เธอสอบได้หรือสอบตก
คำตอบ
She passed the test.  เธอสอบได้
คำถาม
I don’t know who she is.  ฉันไม่ทราบว่า เธอเป็นใคร
คำตอบ
She is our teacher.  เธอเป็นครูของพวกเรา
คำถาม
I’d like to know what you are talking about. ฉันอยากจะทราบว่า คุณกำลังพูดเกี่ยวกับอะไร
คำตอบ
I’m talking about the plan to take a picnic. ฉันกำลังจะพูดเกี่ยวกับแผนการไปปิคนิค
คำถาม
Do you know where they are from?  คุณทราบไหมว่า พวกเขามาจากไหน
คำตอบ
They are from Australia. พวกเขามาจากออสเตรเลีย

 คำถาม

I don’t know when the show will start and finish.

ฉันไม่ทราบว่า การแสดงจะเริ่มเมื่อไรและสิ้นสุดเมื่อไร
คำตอบ
It will start at three and finish at six. การแสดงจะเริ่มบ่าย 3 โมง และสิ้นสุดบ่าย 6 โมง
คำถาม
I want to ask you why we should visit that place. ฉันอยากจะถามคุณว่า ทำไมเราจึงควรไปชมที่นั่น
คำตอบ
Because it is worth studying. เพราะมันสมควรแก่การศึกษา
คำถาม
Can you tell me how I can contact him?
คุณสามารถจะบอกได้ไหมว่า ฉันสามารถติดต่อเขาได้อย่างไร
คำตอบ
You can contact Mm by phone. คุณสามารถติดต่อกับเขาได้ทางโทรศัพท์
คำถาม
Could you tell me how much you have got? คุณจะกรุณาบอกได้ไหมว่า คุณมีรายได้เท่าไร

คำตอบ
30,000 baht a month. สามหมื่นบาทต่อเดือน
